Hasta la Vista, Baby

Todd and Janelle are dicks, but I've gotta warn them. You got a quarter?
-- John Connor, Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991)

I know.

I heard.

The January 6th Committee announced that they have pretty solid evidence Trump himself personally by his very own hand totally committed some crimes. Personally. Himself. He did it. Crimes. Yep, it's true.

Oh boy!

Right? Oh boy! We got him now! Ha ha!

The press is beside themselves this morning. The phrase BREAKING NEWS! BREAKING NEWS! fills my social media feeds and the alert scroll running down the side of one of my screens is red with glee.

We got him now! This time for sure!

Whenever this comes up, and it does come up repeatedly on a very, very regular basis for the last year -- Breaking news Trump committed crimes Oh boy -- those who follow me on Twitter see me quote Edward Furlong as young John Conner from Terminator 2, i.e. "We really got Skynet by the balls now, don't we?"

Heh heh. Man, I love that line.

I love how wrong that kid was.

See, they had the robot arm and the microchip brain from the first time-travelling terminator and without those, Cyberdyne would never be able to build Skynet and thus humankind would be safe from nuclear war and killer robots.

Right? You saw the movie.

They had the microchip. They had the arm. Now, all they had to do was destroy those key items and they'd save the future. Yah! And they spent the next 45 minutes of the movie trying to do exactly that, ending with Robo Arnold giving the world a big thumbs up as he melts into the molten steel and saves the day.

Yeah.

We're saved!

Except...

...there have been what? four sequels and at least three reboots since then and it seems the future is still producing murder robots and Skynet (or Dominion, whatever its calling itself these days) is just fine up there in the future and it's still us who are the endangered species.

"We really got Skynet by the balls now, don't we?"

I mean, don't get me wrong. It's a great flick.

But every time I watch that movie and they get to that line, I laugh.

Yeah, Kid, sure.

Where am I going with this?

Here: At this point, if the big "breaking" story doesn't prominently contain the words "Trump Indicted" you can just save telling me about it. Because I just don't care. Oh, wow, they found evidence Trump committed more crime? Well boy howdy, how about that.

I guess he's going to jail now!

I guess we really got Skynet by the balls this time.

Except, he's never charged.

There's always another sequel. Always another reboot. And he just keeps on being Trump.

And goddamn if it don't look like we're rushing towards a future where we're the endangered species and not him.

So, you know, unless the Attorney General finally decides to get off the pot and start charging this asshole before suddenly it's the next election and he's the fucking president again, I got other things to do.

Like move to Mexico and start training my kid to fight murder robots.

John Connor: We're not gonna make it, are we? People, I mean.
The Terminator: It's in your nature to destroy yourselves.
John Connor: Yeah. Major drag, huh?

  1. Exactly. I don't get too excited about these announcements of things I'm already sure of. We're fucked unless there's an indictment, a trial, and a conviction, and then we're probably still fucked.

  2. Except for the Peter Thiel part New Zealand is looking pretty good too. It also has an easier language to learn, for me anyway.

  3. Yep, I am not gonna believe anything anymore until it's something truly concrete, like an indictment. My fucking blood pressure just can't take the constant outrage-flogging that goes on (mostly on Faux, but certainly occurs on "our" side of things too).
I DO sneak in a few Twitter peeks every day or so at you, "Angry Staffer", and Heather Cox Richardson, but other than that, I try to ignore stuff these days. I'll get excited (like you said) when there's an indictment.
Thanks for driving yourself crazy so we don't have to. ;)

  4. Yup. This is all. about getting access to Eastman's records, then we'll wait some more.....

  5. No surprise in what you say, not that you say it well.

  6. It angers me to know you're right. :(

  7. I stopped getting my hopes up about four "gotcha!'s" ago, honestly. I hope the orange dirtbag gets nailed with something that sticks and sticks *good*, I really do. But it just keeps going on and on.

  8. Keeping up with Trump sequels is exhausting.

  9. Now, while I am sadly certain you're right and we should all start learning the language of the country of our choice well in advance of 2024....

...is it wrong of me to think about (just in the blessed case that there IS one day an indictment) the exact venue, time-frame, and individual wobbly-assed twerking moves involved in my Trump Got Indicted Nekkid Joy Dance, which I have promised to do in the open street should that orange fucknugget ever get what he deserves???

    1. I'm still hopeful that his luck has finally run out. Not for any single crime, but for the mass of documented evidence against him: His 30,000 lies. His public worship of Putin. His attempt to blackmail Ukraine to harm Biden. His responsibility for the 1/6 insurrection. Cheating on his taxes. His petty vindictiveness. Lawsuits, investigations galore. It adds up.

  10. We already have the murder-robots. They look like greyhounds with REALLY big heads and can't think for themselves, yet, but they exist.

  11. If I had a nickel for every time I've thought "This. This is it. This is what finally, definitively takes him down. No way he survives this" . . . well, I could probably buy a really good quality cup of coffee at my local upscale coffee establishment. A guy who can get the evangelical crowd to consider him the second coming of Jesus after the whole Stormy incident is a guy that survive pretty much anything.

  13. When is the USA going to get off its collective arse and DO something about that Trump arsehole?

  14. Yep, until someone in the DOJ grows a pair, I'm in "so what" frame of mind. Personally, I think 45+2 will skate, as always. I'd like to be wrong, but ...

  15. If Trump, by some miracle, is ever convicted, I'm willing to bet that he gets a lesser sentence than Crystal Mason or Pamela Moses. He deserves 20 to life.

  16. Let's get the investigations over and start with the prosecutions. We cannot go on having our hopes raised and dashed. Smoking guns and dead bodies abound. Someone also needs to look into Alvin Bragg, who seemed to have made an awfully quick decision to back off on the trump prosecution.

  17. It took 11 years of investigation, but former King of Illinois (or at least he thought he was and certainly acted like it) Michael Madigan was indicted yesterday on 22 various counts.

    Hope springs eternal.

  18. Indictments are one thing, but finding a jury to convict, that's a deeper kettle of fish, considering that approximately 1/3 of America is enthralled to him.

  19. A more apt comparison would be Michael Myers or Jason Voorhees.

  21. That is doubtless why there was such a frenzied push to pack as many federal courthouses as possible with Trumpanistas. Between the federal courts, the circuit courts, and the right-wing dominated Supreme Court, I'm not going to hold my breath on any indictments happening. We watched DeLay skate away free. Arpaio got protected. Hell, even Cosby walked. Does anybody seriously think Donald Trump, of all people, will spend a single day even serving probation? Laws and punishment are for little people, not for the oligarchs.

  25. The same sentiment is issued at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron

Vision: "Humans are odd. They think order and chaos are somehow opposites, and try to control what won't"

  26. I don't want to see or listen to #TFG. I could stand to see two more clips of him in my lifetime. One of him in a jumpsuit, cuffed, with the caption "Trump Enters Prison to Begin His Sentence," and "Disgraced Former President Trump Has Died."

  27. I remember Fitzmas, back in the 00's, when Karl Rove was 100% certain to be indicted...and then...

Seen this movie too many times.

  28. I will continue to applaud the effort to hold trump accountable. I will not have any faith in the outcome until he is convicted.

  29. J R Ewing. Dallas got to be SO TEDIOUS after a while because I kept watching for his comeupence. And it just never seemed to happen. Did not expect to see it happen in real life. Just change the name to Trump, and the tedium is exactly the same.

    1. As always, the historians learned and the students didn't want to. So, those who did learn history got to watch yet another fucking rerun. This time not produced in Hollywood.

Although, when 'history' repeats it doesn't go like it did last time. So, don't worry so much about it. Just work as best you can to build a better world as this one goes to shit.

Then again I've never understood how Agent Orange got elected either.

  34. TBH, I mostly don’t pay attention to more than the headlines of these stories. It does me no good to fret about the details. That said, I’d rather the AG and the DOJ were methodical and diligent about this than rush into something that ends up failing because an ‘I’ wasn’t dotted or a ‘t’ wasn’t crossed.

  35. Garland can't, he really can't, comment on an investigation before he brings charges. Comey did that, and look how it turned out.

I do not know what DoJ is doing about Trump. I do know that they have been steadily climbing the chain of command in their 1/6 prosecutions. They started with the small fry, getting some of them to turn states evidence. Now they've gotten Oath Keeper Joshua James to plead guilty to seditious conspiracy and obstruction of Congress in exchange for his testimony, the first conviction for seditious conspiracy in these prosecutions. They're going to get Oath Keepers leader Stewart Rhodes at least. But James was also one of Roger Stone's bodyguards, and Stone was (probably still is) one step away from Donald Trump.

So. I don't know that Trump will be charged, but the investigation is getting close to him.

  36. Did the Jan 6 committee "announce" this as if this is a big stepping stone worthy of announcement? Or did the media spin it that way? My understanding is that the committee wanted a search warrant, and filed legal papers stating that attorney-client privilege did not apply because that privilege doesn't cover criminal behavior. But yeah, I'm impatient too, for some actual charges to be filed.

  38. I'm right there with you. Pundits have been collectively paid millions of dollars predicting the impending arrival of DT's long overdue implosion since just a few days after he rode down that escalator in 2015. So they've been professionally wrong for close to what, 7 years now? And yet they're still at it, like the dog who keeps chasing the ball after each and every fake throw. Except the dog would have stopped falling for it 6.99 years ago.
