Oh Hell No!

Software company president John Thompson is the top candidate for U.S. commerce secretary, a senior Democratic official confirmed to FOX News.

Software Company?

Which software company? Because, you know, it's important.

Oh, God, no.

Symantec.

Symantec, creators of the worlds' absolute most useless piss-yellow interface? Symantec, the company that can't adhere to basic standards for look and feel? Symantec, the operators of one of the worst ever customer service departments in the history of software companies? Symantec, creators of one of the biggest pieces of bloatware since the Windows platform it runs on?

Symantec? Symantec?

That Symantec?

Good Lord, President Obama, you're tech savvy. What the hell are you thinking?

Update: for those of you surfing in from Scalzi's Whatever this morning. Howdy. Note that we're (mostly) big gushy Obama fans around here, please read on, you'll see. However, I'm really not a fan of Symantec or Thompson. Really. Hell, I'd be happier if President Obama picked Bill Gates for Commerce, but then again he didn't ask me.

Anyway, thanks for coming by.

  1. Maybe part of the deal is that he has to fix it. ;) You can hope, right?

I use the corporate version - have only had one minor issue in 7 years of using it. ::knockknock::

    Do Dingleberries use AV software?

  2. Dude, Obama all ready pissed all over us by nominating a Treasury Secretary that can't use TurboTax.

At least the Symantec guy can probably use his own software, he just opts to use freeware when he wants his computer to work at the speed it's supposed to. :p

  3. Since The Husband takes care of all computer issues, I have no opinion on this (although I think he hates Symantec). How come the font of this post is so small?

  4. Obama can't use Kaspersky, cause like... he can see Palin's house from Russia.

  5. Jim, you're making too big a deal out of this: Thompson came pre-installed in the White House and Obama's only going to use him during the first year. After that, he'll probably switch over to J.R. Smith or maybe just see if he can get along without a Commerce Secretary, although I think everybody will point out that he probably needs one just in case, even if he ends up trying to run DC using an open-source cabinet.

  6. Um, I have no idea what happened, font wise. I published this post from my laptop last night (I'm using my old HP laptop, while the Tablet is in the shop). The Font looked normal there - obviously it's not, looking at it on my desktop machine this morning.

Very weird. All kinds of embedded HTML code in the post.

Hmmm, let's see if we can fix it.

  7. Found the problem.

    Fox News, of course.

I did a cut and past on first sentence. On the desktop machine into Live Writer, a C&P strips off any HTML coding, on the laptop into Blogger's editor apparently it carries over.

Here's the funny thing, looking at the font type and coding, it would appear that FOX news uses Macs, since the font was Apple. What's the bastion of conservatism doing using liberal machines?

    bawahahahahahaha!

    Fixed.

  8. Eric, so your saying that Thompson is like the Trial Version?

Can I delete him and install AVG?

John, exactly, see I figure any new President is going to pick some folks I like and some folks I don't. I figured he used up his one crappy pick with Giethner. I'm willing to spot him one, but Christ, not Thompson.

  9. The good news is that the Symantec CEO probably has nothing to do with the crappy coding of NAV, etc. Balmer, for example, never wrote a line of Vista code. (I think if he did, Vista would explode all over your computer.)

  10. Dr. Phil has a good point. Obama didn't select him to be Director of Product Management. ;)

  11. Now, don't you start, Jeri.

Dr. Phil, the funny thing is that I actually like Vista a hell of a lot better than XP. I like the Aero Interface very much. I've never had a single crash with Vista, and it runs great on my big machines, fast and smooth. And talking others through problems on the phone with Vista is orders of magnitude easier than with XP, at least in my experience.

Now, I do run the Ultimate package on very high end machines, and that makes a huge difference over Basic on a low end machine. No doubt you have to have the hardware to support Vista - but this is no different than any other operating system. I'd like to see you run System X on a one of those old Mac Jr boxes (I always think of the Banana Jr from Bloom County, damn I miss Berkly Breathed).

I make fun of Vista sure, because it's Microsoft. Always go for the cheap laugh, that's me, but in reality I like Vista a lot and wouldn't go back to XP if you paid me.

(Did you click on the J.R. Smith link? ;-) )

  13. Hell, I can't use Turbo Tax and I've got an IT degree!!! (TT tried to screw me the first time I used it, and I've never forgiven it).

NAV will slow the hell out of any computer on any OS. Which is why my home box has free software on it. My local DSL slows me down enough as it is without any other conflicts added into the mess.

I'm sure the new Prez had his reasons for this particular appointment, and so far he's been spot on with the others to date. Only time will tell.

  16. Michelle, I was going to say the same thing, but then I try not to feed the trolls, even on their own blogs...

  17. Well, this just took a sudden and ugly turn.

Put down those torches and pitchforks, you rabble. Back! Back! I say. Don't make me unleash ShopKat, because I will and then you all will be sorry. Yes, yes.

    ReplyDelete
  18. ShopKat uses XP like any sane Microsoft user. (cue laughter)

  19. ShopKat uses CP/M and she likes everybody. She's a bit of a tart, she is.

    ReplyDelete
  20. ShopKat should try Kubuntu. It's swell. If she's more comfy with the command line, she can run a terminal window in KDE.

    :-P

    ReplyDelete
  21. Command Line?

ShopKat purrfurrs a mouse driven interface. As do all cats.

(did you see what I did there? Purr. I kill me)

    ReplyDelete
  22. yeah...that's the ticket. Threaten us with something warm, soft, fuzzy and cuddley that can be easily bribed. HAHAHAHAHAHA!!

ShopKat LIKES us. (pats ShopKat on head, scritches ear, goes back to work beating legaleze into submission) So there.

  23. Fair enough, Wendy. Therefor you get cat box cleaning detail for today. Michelle, you're on tomorrow. Eric, you've got the weekend.

  24. Gee, thanks. I'll add it to the pile my OTHER boss already heaped on my desk.

  25. Hey, you guys are the ones who wanted a cat.

    Remember our deal?

You feed it, you clean up after it. Oh we will, you all cried, we will, Jim. Please, please, please, can we have it, Jim, can we? We'll take care of it.

    Remember that?

  26. I have now virtually cleaned the kitty litter box and given darling ShopKat a tummy rub and treat.
