Even PassID doesn't do it for me, but I'm not going to like any national ID system if only because it's going to be enacted by a bureaucracy that has yet to do anything on this scale without muffing it.

As for the Fundies, yes they do want the Rapture/Armageddon to happen -- to everybody else. The reason they're terrified is that they know that if the metaphor really is LITERAL, they're as far up shit creek as the rest of us. No religion which sets standards so impossibly high is going to have many making it through the gate of the first pass. ;)Alesia Matsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15519487703722156234noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8243351006478134285.post-78508169475867201642009-07-23T16:38:58.827-05:002009-07-23T16:38:58.827-05:00Charles Stross recently had a post about some aspe...Charles Stross recently had a post about some aspects of the UK system which might relate:

http://www.antipope.org/charlie/blog-static/2009/07/false_positives.htmlmensleynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8243351006478134285.post-43978886417053369062009-07-23T13:05:11.079-05:002009-07-23T13:05:11.079-05:00Actually, Jim, I'm one of those that intensely...Actually, Jim, I'm one of those that intensely dislikes RFID technology. And IIRC, current passports (and the passport ID) already contain them (and I have both).

I dislike it because of it's ubiquity and networkability. At a panel when we were asked what we thought was the technology we thought was most dislikeable in a Big Brother kind of way, I replied "RFID", and C. Doctorow replied "Linking databases" - RFID's function requires linked databases, but you can have linked database that aren't as troubling. And I dislike it because it isn't "choose-able" (that is, I can choose not to have my cell phone, right now there's no option to choose "non-RFID clothing, etc"). RFID in IDs are troubling, but I can dump them, or only carry them if I know I'll be needing them (such as the passport).

I should also say, my cell doesn't have GPS (although they could triangulate it, but not if I turn it off, and it's easy to dump), my cars don't have on-star, and I tend to run in a cash economy (except when I can't, such as ordering online and general banking, but I don't write many checks to stores except when it would be cumbersome to carry that amount of cash). But then, I'm paranoid that way. Also a result of my past.

Oh, and Nathan, because I've researched the End Times for a book I'm writing, the Mark of the Beast is meant for the followers of the Anti-Christ. Nobody is getting past the Pearly Gates or into New Jerusalem if they scan positive. Their ticket to the Rapture will be null and void.

And burning/tattooing barcodes into people is so 80's Conspiracy theory (and, yeah, it was there).Steve Buchheithttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12999709767641212586noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8243351006478134285.post-77689985468704103472009-07-23T11:52:42.702-05:002009-07-23T11:52:42.702-05:00Oh noes! I'm pretty su...Oh noes! I been Big Brothered!

I'm pretty sure the Massachusetts drivers license is already RealID compliant. It has all the info you mentioned, as well as a digital photo (and thumbnail digital photo, too) It has a holograph-ish thing over the photo and thumbnail, and has both a bar code and wider "speckled" kind of laser-readable tag.

It also took about a month or so to get my first one. Now I can just renew over the Internet a couple of times before I have to again appear in person.

So I've been RealIDed for several years. Let's see how I've been affected.

My identity hasn't been stolen (at least, as far as I know! /paranoia)

My bank account hasn't been broken in to. I did have some fraudulent credit card charges, but those were removed almost immediately.

I haven't been chosen for extra screening by the TSA when I fly. (!) (Hey, if this is the result of having a ReadID-compliant ID, I'm all for it!)

I occasionally get asked for my Zip Code when I use my credit cards in unusual places (USAA FTW!)

In other words, having a RealID hasn't really affected me at all.

Is there potential for abuse in this-here modern world of satellite imaging, multiple data bases, electronice surveillance of many kinds? Sure.

Am I worried that it will happen to me? Nope.

I'm pissed at the way it was passed, being finagled through Congress without anyone really knowing about it, but that's our American government. I'd love to have responsible Congress-critters taking care of laws and such, but fortunately or unfortunately, they have to be voted into office, and that is simultaneously the best and the worst feature of a representative government.

Charlie Stross has a pretty good rant (http://www.antipope.org/charlie/blog-static/2009/07/false_positives.html) about DBs, IDs, and false positives that points out a better reason to be afraid of attempts to establish a national ID database, but these are things that are coming or are already here. Modern Problems.

But Jim is part of those problems, cause he requires some kind of independent ID thingy just to post comments on his blog... Oh noes, theys can follow mes into the Internets!!!

As to "Mark of the Beast" or "End Times" or Birthers or the rest of the "great unwashed", snortle, hehe!Tomhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00273212686600552771noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8243351006478134285.post-80830156397460381682009-07-23T11:37:51.620-05:002009-07-23T11:37:51.620-05:00I'm suspicious of anything the SS, oops I mean...I'm suspicious of anything the SS, oops I mean DHS, proposes. It is a perception of security, as was aiport security prior to 9/11, and I think now.

ID was not required prior to 9/11 by the government, but by the airlines to make certain that the person who had registered for the ticket was the person flying on the ticket. Not a security reason but a financial one, to prevent a market in private sales of tickets.

I'm not aware that any of the 9/11 hijackers was carring anything not allowed. When I checked my comptuter bag after 9/11 there were three knives in it, which was one more than I knew about. Electrician's knife with screw driver blade and two miniture box cutters, one in a tool kit, one in an office kit.

I don't see it as any better than what there is now, there will be holes, with the thought that they have been filled.ntschttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10086019980409702904noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8243351006478134285.post-11267117479426193222009-07-23T02:13:37.979-05:002009-07-23T02:13:37.979-05:00A quick look at Security and ID in Australia. Some...A quick look at Security and ID in Australia. Some things are country-wide, some are state.

The basic proof of ID in Australia is the 100 point check. Originally designed for opening bank accounts, it's now used elsewhere, including some state's Drivers licences. In Queensland, they use a similar system for it's DL.

However, you need less ID for other things here. I don't need to show ID to get through security at an airport (immigration for OS travel, yes. Security, no.) I've never met any ID checks to enter a courthouse, or any other civilian accessible public building. Getting into the staff areas of one of these buildings unaccompanied may be different, of course.

Visiting a prison, ID would be required. I would usually need ID to visit a military base, though I have done so without showing ID a few times - depends on the base and why I'm there.

You do of course need a licence to drive legally, and it's usually accepted as valid ID for most other day to day occasions.

As for RealID - I'd be worried about the fact that so much of the background checking is reliant on a mix of databases. Since 10-15% of ID database records have been shown to have errors in some studies, and the more databases you have the worse this gets, I wouldn't be happy unless there was a robust method of sorting out problems caused by false positive errors. Particularily since they keep a record of the fact you were denied an ID for five years, and that will probably stuff your life up for at least that long.

Considering this is to be run by the DHS, whose record with such things is less than stellar, I can see why many people hate the idea.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06757253671810456822noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8243351006478134285.post-51493023961589888432009-07-22T23:56:28.691-05:002009-07-22T23:56:28.691-05:00You'd think the Obama-isn't-a-citizen peop...You'd think the Obama-isn't-a-citizen people would embrace ReadID, and force Obama to get a new driver's license. Shows you what I know about religious fundamentalism.

Ahem. On the subject at hand.

I'm not against Real I.D. per se. Actually, I'm not really even against a Federal I.D.. Perhaps that's because I carried one of my own for so long, and I have no emotional hook on the subject - YMMV.

However, I do have concerns surrounding the security of such an endeavor. I know enough about "the system" to realize that the privacy people are screaming about is already gone. I don't like it, but I'm a realist.

My concern is the utter fucking incompetence of so many employees on the public payroll. Without any malice or forethought, some career GS-5 could compromise millions of people's identities. This happens all the time to service members - do the feds thing they're going to do such a better job than the DoD with 1,000% increase in data? Yeah, right.

I don't really give a rat's ass about people's religious objections. Not politically correct, I know, but there you go. I'm all for reasonable accommodation (like having a female TSA official check the ID's and faces of veiled women, for example), but I'm opposed to giving a free pass to ANYONE. Such systems must apply to all, or to none.

And the yokels who are complaining about this system making it too difficult to get fake ID's? Really, Jethro?
