What I remember most of the talk was he spent more time talking about how he got interested in astronomy and telescopes than he spent on the discovery itself. And then more time on what new efforts were being made at making new discoveries. And a bit of time saying we need to continue funding these efforts because it is important to our future. My first husband was 1st Gen Sicilian-American and I'm still close with his family. I did it mostly for recipes and some camaraderie which Rapid City, SD does decidedly NOT offer.
Today, I left the group. They all went batshit crazy over somebody defacing a Columbus statue somewhere. Well, many of them did. Good Lord, you'd think somebody had shit on the Pope! Raving about how if Columbus hadn't discovered 'Murica we wouldn't have a nation, and all. Yeah. That level of crazy.
I love my relatives but some of them are darn near that bad. And I know they are all good, honest, loving, decent people. We don't agree on politics, but we probably never did. We just didn't talk about it.
Out here in Rapid City, today is decidedly Native American Day. And I'm okay with that. He used to come to my high-school physics class and give a lecture and show us those fuzzy pictures of a blob of light shifting back and forth. I was totally fascinated by the sheer amount of work that went into it. He'd walk into the classroom, hold up his walking stick, and say. "I'm here to raise cane!"

I also have a thing for Columbus day, not because of Columbus, who was an asshat, but because it's the day I met my sweetheart. We decided to make our anniversary "Columbus Day" instead of the actual date so I'd always have the day off.
